Baycol (aka cerivastatin) Pulled From the Market:
On August 8, 2001, the makers of Baycol announced that it would discontinue marketing, distributing and selling this prescription drug, effective immediately. The makers of Baycol announced that “Patients who are currently taking Baycol should have their Baycol discontinued and be switched to an alternative therapy”. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it has received reports that more than 30 people have died while taking Baycol.

What Is Baycol?
Baycol was initially approved for use in the United States in 1997 by the Food and Drug Administration. Baycol (cerivastatin) is used worldwide by about 6 million people.

Baycol is a member of a class of cholesterol lowering (lipid lowering) drugs that are commonly referred to as “statins”. Statins lower cholesterol levels by blocking a specific enzyme in the body that is involved in the synthesis of cholesterol.
