You're in an accident... What do you do now?
Call Emergency Help
First, call emergency response to request both medical and police assistance. If at all possible try not to move the trucks and automobiles involved in the accident. If you have a camera of your own and are able to take pictures of the accident, do so. If not wait until police arrive to take pictures of the placement of vehicles. This is very important and can be used to determine who was at fault amongst other key elements.
Gather Witnesses
Try to locate people who saw the accident happen. Retain the witness's names, phone number and address. Also, exchange information with all the drivers involved in the collision; name, phone numbers, addresses driver's license information and insurance carrier. Be sure to find out who is investigating the collision as well. Is it the local Police, County Sherriff, State Patrol, or Federal? This can be important when the collision report is needed for investigation.
Semi-trucks can weigh up to 80,000 pounds, so in the event you are involved in a collision, the injuries can be very serious and even fatal. Adrenalin and shock can alter ones senses in situations like being involved in a trucking collision. If an ambulance is brought to the scene it is in your best interest to go to the emergency room and be examined by a doctor. Injuries may also become evident at a later date. It is important to have documentation that medical attention was implemented at the time of the accident.
