Joplin, MO (January 04, 2021) – Two people were killed and another in police custody after a major car crash on Sunday, January 3rd in Joplin.
At about 3:55 p.m., officers from the Joplin Police Department responded to a car accident on 28th Street near the Connecticut Avenue intersection.
Reports state that a Ford SUV heading northbound along Connecticut Avenue was hit by a Chevrolet Silverado pick-up truck that was speeding westbound down 28th Street when the pick-up neglected to come to a stop at the stop sign at 28th Street and Connecticut Avenue, causing it to collide with the Ford.
Both occupants of the Ford, 55-year-old Terry Copple, and 48-year-old Rhonda Copple, both residents of Joplin, died from crash-related injuries.
The driver of the Silverado, 30-year-old Rita M. Glasgow, a resident of Joplin, was taken to an area hospital for treatment of serious injures but has since been remanded into the custody of the Joplin Police Department.
Investigators were able to determine that Glasgow, who was driving a stolen vehicle, was also under the influence, and had drugs and drug paraphernalia in her possession.
