Rolla, MO (November 21, 2022) – An automobile accident took place in Phelps County on Friday morning that resulted in injuries for several people. Calls for help were received by emergency dispatchers at around 9:45 a.m. on November 18.
Preliminary reports provided by the Missouri State Highway Patrol show that a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck was stopped in the northbound passing lane of US Highway 63 as they attempted to make a left turn. The Dodge was struck in the rear by a 2006 Chrysler town and country, forcing it to travel into the southbound lane. The Dodge was then struck head-on by a 2000 Ford F6 50.
The Dodge then traveled back into the northbound lane and collided with a 2012 GMC Savanna school bus, causing both vehicles to travel across the roadway. A 2015 Ford Taurus then crashed into the rear of the Chrysler. All of the vehicles except for the bus were totaled in the crash. All five vehicles had to be towed from the scene.
Three victims suffered injuries due to the crash and were transported to Phelps Health Hospital and Rolla, Missouri. The victims were identified as 57-year-old Kenneth Fears of Rolla, Missouri, 69-year-old Ricky Arthur of Edgar Springs, Missouri, and 85-year-old Oma Fockler of Houston, Missouri.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol is actively investigating the crash at this time.
We hope Kenneth Fears, Ricky Arthur, and Oma Fockler recover quickly following this accident.
Car Accidents in Missouri
Rear-end collisions continue to take place every single day in the state of Missouri. Many of these accidents have severe consequences for those involved. Regrettably, the majority of these accidents take place as a result of drivers who engage in negligent action. Drivers who are distracted continue to be the leading cause of rear-end accidents in our state.
Distracted driving can take many forms, including texting while driving, talking on the phone, eating or drinking while driving, and even simply being distracted by something inside the car.
Drivers who fail to yield are another common cause of rear-end accidents. All drivers are required to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians and other vehicles when appropriate, but many drivers fail to do so. This can lead to serious accidents, especially if the driver who fails to yield is going fast.
Impairment is also a major factor in rear-end accidents. Driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs is extremely dangerous and increases the risk of being involved in an accident.
