This condition became a topic of nationwide interest when a Missouri man who worked in a popcorn factory filed a lawsuit against International Flavors and Fragrances Inc., a New York company that manufactures the popcorn which was made in his place of employment. The plaintiff in the case stated that he had acquired Popcorn Packers Lung, also known as Bronchiolitis Obliterans, at his workplace from the butter flavor vapors in the mixing room.

The butter flavoring that the victim was exposed to contained diacetyl which is a butter flavored ketone that the Centers for Disease Control believes may have been the cause of the illness.
