In December 2000, Sulzer Medica, manufacturers of medical devices, announced a voluntary recall of their artificial hip implants. A certain lubricant oil used in the production of the device is preventing the implant from properly adhering to the hipbone. A change in the manufacturing process of the Sulzer hip implants is blamed for the defect. The hip implant in question had been implanted in over 17,000 patients before it was determined to be defective. In most patients, the hip replacement surgery failed because the natural hipbone was not able to bond with the artificial socket contaminated by oil. As a result, patients living with the hip implant have suffered painful side effects because of the failed replacement. In addition, many have undergone invasive surgical procedures to remove the defective Sulzer implant. Sulzer has assumed responsibility for this defect. Manufacturers of medical devices need to be held accountable for their products and any resulting injuries that come from a malfunction or defect.
