In a study published in an article on March 30, 2010 in the American Journal of Gastroenterology, isotretinoin was once again linked to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Accutane Lawsuit Information
Accutane® is the brand name of a drug containing the active ingredient isotretinoin. Isotretinoin has been marketed under the brand name Accutane® for years and is also available in many generic forms. Examples of generic Accutane® are Amnesteem, Claravis, Sotret. Isotretinoin belongs to a class of chemical compounds known as retinoids and is used in the treatment of severe recalcitrant nodular acne.
Crohn’s disease most commonly affects a part of the small intestine known as the ileum in the upper part of the large intestines; however any part of the digestive tract can be affected. Crohn’s disease can affect all layers of the tissue comprising the intestinal wall.
Ulcerative colitis results in inflammation and ulcers which are usually limited to the lower part of the large intestines i.e. colon; the rectum can also be involved. Ulcerative colitis affects the mucosal lining of the colon with inflammation occurring. This condition can become so severe it results in surgical removal of all or part of the colon.
