Complete® Moisture Plus™ Contact Lens Solution

In May 2007, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced a direct link between the use of Advance Medical Option Inc.’s Complete Moisture Plus Contact Lens Solution and Acanthamoeba keratitis, a rare and serious eye infection. After the release by the CDC, Advance Medical Options Inc. (AMO) voluntarily recalled its solution.

Acanthamoeba keratitis is a severe eye infection caused by an opportunistic free-living soil amoeba that is most commonly associated with unsanitary conditions and incorrect contact lens handling. Symptoms of Ancanthamoeba keratitis include eye pain or redness, blurred vision, light sensitivity, sensation of something in the eye, or excessive tearing. Ancanthamoeba keratitis is seldom diagnosed correctly the first time. This is due to the fact that the symptoms of the disease may lessen with treatment or on their own but never fully heal. It can take years before a correct diagnosis is made, usually after all treatments have failed. The danger is that, if left untreated for an extended period of time, Ancanthamoeba keratitis can lead to permanent visual impairment or blindness.

Although AMO performed a voluntary recall, the company stood by its product and blamed the outbreak on improper handling and washing of contact lenses. However, CDC officials said their study showed that in 58 percent of the confirmed cases people had used AMO’s Complete Moisture Plus Contact Lens Solution a month before the onset of symptoms, and 39 percent had used only that solution. The CDC findings established a strong causal link between the use of AMO’s contact solution and the amoeba infection.
