Mifeprex®
Manufacturer: Mifeprex (mifepristone; RU486)
Uses: This drug is used in the medical termination of early pregnancy
More Information
Mifeprex is used in combination with another medication, misoprostol, to put an end to early pregnancies – those within 49 days of the start of the last menstrual period. The drug was approved in September 2000, but since that time the Food and Drug Administration has received reports of serious adverse events in the U.S. Those events include several deaths.
The FDA reported several women who used the drug for a medical abortion died from sepsis, a severe illness caused by infection of the bloodstream. Most of these women were infected with the same type of bacteria but the symptoms the women displayed were not the usual symptoms of sepsis. It was unclear whether mifepristone and misoprostol caused the deaths, the FDA said.
