NuvaRing® is inserted into the vagina for three weeks and then removed for one week to allow menstruation. A new ring is then inserted and the cycle is repeated.
Like other forms of birth control, NuvaRing® works by releasing two hormones, estrogen and progestin, into the body. NuvaRing® uses a progestin called Etonogestrel, the active metabolite of a third-generation hormone called desogestrel. In 2007, the consumer safety group Public Citizen petitioned the FDA to ban the use of third-generation oral contraceptives -- contraceptives taken in pill form -- due to an increased risk of dangerous blood clots. Blood clots can travel through the body's circulatory system and cause severe damage to the brain, heart and lungs, including heart attack and stroke.
In fact, all hormone-based contraceptives increase a woman's chance of developing blood clots, which can lead to strokes. The manufacturer of NuvaRing® notes that the ring contains a lower hormone dose than most oral contraceptives and points to a study that concluded switching from the pill to the ring appeared to lower the chance of clotting.
The most common adverse events reported by five to 14 percent of women using NuvaRing® in clinical trials were vaginitis, headache, upper respiratory tract infection, vaginal secretion, sinusitis, weight gain and nausea. The manufacturer acknowledges that an increased risk of the following serious adverse reactions has been associated with the use of combination hormonal contraceptives:
- Thrombophlebitis and venous thrombosis with or without embolism;
- Cerebral hemorrhage;
- Cerebral thrombosis;
- Hypertension;
- Arterial thromboembolism;
- Gallbladder disease;
- Pulmonary embolism;
- Hepatic adenomas or benign liver tumors;
- Myocardial infarction;
- Loss of scalp hair.
