DePuy ASR President Resigns after DePuy Hip Recall - The following is an excerpt from wsj.com: "The president of DePuy Orthopaedics, Johnson & Johnson unit that makes replacement hips and knees and is dealing with an expensive product recall, has resigned his position to pursue outside interests, a spokeswoman confirmed Monday. David Floyd has been president of DePuy since 2007...DePuy in August recalled certain hip-replacement systems due to a high rate of repeat surgeries... DePuy has the largest replacement hip business in a market where it competes with Zimmer Holdings Inc. among other firms.
DePuy has announced that data received by the company shows that more people than expected who received the DePuy ASR™ Hip Replacement System experienced pain and other symptoms that led to a second hip replacement surgery. Information showed that five years after the DePuy ASR™ Hip Replacement implantation, approximately 12% of patients, or 1 in 8, who had received the DePuy ASR™ resurfacing device, and 13% of patients, or 1 in 8, who had received the DePuy ASR™ total hip replacement needed a second surgery. The recall means that monitoring and testing of DePuy ASR™ Hip Replacement may be necessary of individuals who have been implanted with either of the DePuy ASR Hip Systems.
