More Information
Permax is the marketing name for pergolide, a product that is not currently available for purchase in the U.S. Pergolide is a member of a class of drugs known as dopamine agonists. It was once used in conjunction with other drugs to manage the signs and symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, such as tremors and slowness of movement.
The companies that manufacture and distribute Permax agreed to withdraw this drug from the marketplace after studies uncovered its potential to cause heart valve damage. In 2006, a boxed warning regarding the risk of serious heart valve damage was added to the labeling for pergolide. Two studies published in The New England Journal of Medicine in January 2007 confirmed that patients with Parkinson’s disease who were treated with pergolide had an increased chance of serious damage to their heart valves when compared to patients who did not receive the drug. Parkinson’s disease is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system that often impairs the sufferer’s motor skills and speech.
