Report Warns of Possible Birth Defect Link

According to Bloomberg, a Pfizer report surfaced in 2015 showing evidence that scientists warned executives about a potential link between the drug and birth defects. The scientists also recommended changes to the medication’s safety warning. The document directly contradicts the company’s constant rejections of claims that its product has caused birth defects and abnormalities in newborns.

Pfizer is currently facing more than 1,000 lawsuits alleging that the company had knowledge of the serious side effects that its anti-depressant could cause, including its link to cardiac abnormalities in newborn babies.

The company successfully defended its claim in the first suit to go to trial in April 2015, which was completed before the document was disclosed previously in another case. In response to news of the document, Pfizer is claiming that the plaintiffs have “mischaracterized” the reports and “cherry-picked data from the report.”
