New developments in a case against Pfizer Inc. show that the company may have known about the potential link between the popular anti-depressant Zoloft and birth defects.

Report Warns of Possible Birth Defect Link

According to Bloomberg, a Pfizer report has surfaced that shows scientists warned executives last year about a potential link between the drug and birth defects. The scientists also recommended changes to the medication’s safety warning.

The document directly contradicts the company’s constant rejections to claims that its product has caused birth defects and abnormalities in newborns.

Pfizer is currently facing more than 1,000 lawsuits alleging that the company had knowledge of the serious side effects that its anti-depressant could cause, including its link to cardiac abnormalities in newborn babies.

The company successfully defended its claim in the first suit to go to trial in April, which was completed before the document was disclosed last week in another case.

In response to news of the document, Pfizer is claiming that the plaintiffs have “mischaracterized” the reports and “cherry-picked data from the report.”
