Seymour, MO - Woman Airlifted After Train Strikes Car on Commercial St
Seymour, MO (April 21, 2021) - One woman sustained serious injures when her car was struck by a train on Wednesday, April 21st in Seymour.
The collision took place at about 1:00 p.m. on the train tracks on Commercial Street.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that the woman was driving through the intersection when her vehicle got stuck between the two stop arms on either side of the railroad tracks.
Officials believe that one of the stop arms may have fallen onto her car as she was crossing, causing her to reverse onto the tracks just as a train came by.
The vehicle’s driver was airlifted to a hospital in Springfield hospital with serious injuries. Paramedics stated that she was conscious upon their arrival.
Troopers think the train was traveling at about 40 miles per hour when it crashed into the woman’s car.
No one onboard the train was harmed during the incident.
Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
Train-Involved Accidents in Seymour
The state of Missouri is home to 1,541 miles of Union Pacific track, as well as two of its largest rail centers in St. Louis and Kansas City. Kansas City also has a major Union Pacific freight classification yard, with six rail lines uniting from all four directions.
Although Union Pacific claims that safety is its top priority, the Federal Railroad Administration’s Office of Safety Analysis reports that there were 2,519 recorded railroad fatalities and injuries nationwide in just the five-month window from January 1, 2020, to May 31, 2020. 346 of these accidents involved Union Pacific and 65 of them resulted in a fatality.
Accidents that take place at highway-railway crossings have the highest rate, approximately 300 to 400, of annual train-related fatalities. Someone is liable for every single train crossing accident, including those responsible for track maintenance, crossing signal maintenance, and the upkeep of the roadways that lead to the tracks.
Railway crossing collisions stem from multiple possible causes, such as faulty crossing signals, like those with no lights, no gates, and overgrown shrubbery, all of which make an approaching train difficult to see. It is essential to document the crash site before the railroad company has a chance to clear the scene. It is up to them to make sure that the warning devices are clearly visible and in proper working order.
In rural areas, a train neglecting to sound its horn could result in an accident, particularly at crossings with no gate. A lot of railroad crossings only have crossbucks or lights. Obstructed sightlines make the train or the crossing itself hard to see. In some instances, private crossings are upheld by a property owner instead of the railroad company.
