Kansas City, MO (August 08, 2021) – A motorcycle rider was killed and another driver was taken into custody after a Sunday evening crash in the Westport neighborhood of Kansas City.

Police were dispatched to the scene of the accident at about 6:20 p.m. on Sunday, August 8th near the intersection of Lawrence Street and Broadway Boulevard.

The crash occurred when the adult male driver of a white Nissan Maxima that was parked along the curb on Broadway Boulevard pulled out and started to make a U-turn in front of northbound traffic. In the meantime, the driver of a Piaggio Aprilia motorcycle was riding northbound along Broadway, in the direction of 42nd Street.

As the driver made the U-turn, the motorcyclist struck the back left corner of the car. The impact ejected the rider from the motorcycle.

The motorcyclist was transported by ambulance to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The victim has not yet been publicly identified.

Immediately following the accident, the Nissan’s driver veered off the roadway and into the grass on the side of the street, then kept driving on grass and sidewalk until he was able to drive around parked cars and re-enter the roadway.

After getting back on the road, the Nissan’s driver continued on a few blocks before parking, police said. He then exited his vehicle and returned to the scene on foot.

Spectators at the scene recognized him as the driver of the Nissan, and he was taken into custody. Officials say he is under investigation for possible impairment.

We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time.
