Kansas City, MO (February 05, 2021) – A 5-year-old sustained life-threatening injuries following a car accident on Thursday, February 4th.

Kansas City police were dispatched to the scene of a three-vehicle collision at about 9:00 p.m. at the junction of Interstate 435 and Stadium Drive.

According to reports, a Chevrolet Impala ran out of gas and pulled off the roadway next to the on-ramp with its hazard lights on. As the Impala’s battery began to die, the driver contacted a cousin for help.

The cousin, who was driving a Chevrolet Traverse, arrived to help his stranded family member. Inside the Traverse were a driver, a front-seat passenger, a 4-year-old, and a 5-year-old. Turning its hazard lights on as well, the Traverse pulled off the road in front of the disabled Impala.

It was then that, according to police, a Ramp Laramie Sport pick-up truck driven by Britt Reid, the Kansas City Chiefs assistant linebackers coach, was heading southbound along the on-ramp preparing to get on the highway when it hit the Impala and then the Traverse.

35-year-old Reid, who is the son of the Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, has been a part of the coaching staff since about the 2013 season.

Neither the driver of the Impala nor the driver or front-seat passenger of the Traverse was harmed.

The 5-year-old in the backseat of the Traverse sustained life-threatening injuries. A 4-year-old who was also in the backseat suffered injuries believed to be non-life-threatening.

Both children were transported via ambulance to an area hospital for emergency medical treatment. As of late Friday night, the 5-year-old was still listed in critical condition

According to a search warrant application, Reid admitted to officers that he had consumed two to three alcoholic beverages and taken Adderall as per his prescription.

This accident is under investigation by local law enforcement.

Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families at this time. We hope for their full recovery.

Alcohol-Related Car Accidents in Kansas City

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that alcohol impairment starts to take place after just two drinks. A blood-alcohol level of 0.02% is enough to cause difficulties following an object and a reduced ability to perform two tasks at once.

A blood-alcohol level of 0.05%, the equivalent of about three drinks, and still under the legal limit, is enough to cause problems with coordination, difficulty maintaining control of the vehicle, inattentiveness, and a reduced capacity for reacting appropriately in an emergency situation.

By the time someone actually approaches the legal blood-alcohol level of 0.08%, the equivalent of around four drinks, a person experiences a significant decline in their ability to concentrate, lapses in their short-term memory, a decreased ability to process information, difficulty maintaining speed, and impaired vision and judgment.

Victims involved in accidents are often forced out of work for several weeks at a time, going without the monetary support they need to pay their bills and take care of their families. To make the struggle even worse, towering medical bills start rolling in immediately.
