Johnson Co, MO - Six Hospitalized After Chemical Spill at Vet Clinic on Johnson Dr
Johnson Co, MO (June 11, 2021) - According to fire officials, six people were hospitalized on Wednesday, June 9th when a gallon of formaldehyde spilled out inside the Mission Veterinary Emergency & Specialty.
Firefighters with Johnson County Consolidated Fire District No. 2 responded to a HAZMAT call at about 4:00 p.m. asking them to investigate a chemical spill that took place at the 24-hour veterinary clinic in the 5900 block of Johnson Drive.
Upon their arrival, firefighters discovered that people had attempted to clean up the leaked chemical and that several people who had interacted with the formaldehyde had begun feeling sick.
The alert was then upgraded to a hazardous material spill and more paramedics and firefighters, including a hazmat team, reported to the scene.
The clinic was evacuated and a total of six people were taken to area hospitals for emergency medical treatment. All six victims have since been released. At the time the spill occurred, there were around two dozen people in the clinic.
Firefighters used fans to ventilate the clinic before permitting any employees to re-enter. The scene was cleared at about 7:30 p.m.
Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
