Grandview, MO (May 03, 2021) – Police responded to a series of serious accidents that shut down Interstate 49 in both directions on Monday, May 3rd in Grandview.
Reports show that at about 5:15 a.m. the northbound lanes of the interstate were closed at Blue Ridge Boulevard and the southbound lanes were closed at Main Street.
Officers working the scene said the major collision was actually three different accidents involving five vehicles that occurred one right after the other.
An official from the Missouri State Highway Patrol stated that a car and a tractor-trailer collided and came to a stop in the middle of the interstate. In an attempt to avoid colliding with that accident, another vehicle swerved and struck the median, and overturned, throwing a passenger from the car.
Moments later, a southbound propane truck also tried to circumvent the collisions but instead crashed into the second vehicle and came to rest on top of the concrete barrier.
Two people were injured during the accident. Their current conditions are unknown.
The affected area of the interstate remained closed for about four hours for road clean-up and police investigation.
Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
Major Car Accidents in Grandview
Following a car crash, one of the foremost worries that everyone has is which driver was at fault, also referred to as liability.
Liability is based on the duty that vehicle operators owe to others on or near the roadway. According to Missouri law, drivers owe each other, passengers in their vehicle, and other people on or around the roadway, a legal responsibility to show the highest possible standard of care.
In this sense, Missouri is different from other states since most others only require drivers to show a degree of care that is comparable to what a reasonable person would have demonstrated in a similar situation. This is usually referred to as the reasonable person standard.
So, following a Missouri car crash, the question that most needs to be answered is which driver failed to show the greatest standard of care? Ultimately, the trier of fact may conclude that neither of the drivers was liable, one driver was liable, or that both drivers were liable, in which case state law allows liability to be allocated between the drivers by determining percentages of liability.
