Bicycle Accidents in Columbia
In Missouri, vehicles and bicyclists are expected to share the road. According to Missouri law, bicyclists are afforded the same rights as the driver of a motor vehicle.
In spite of these rights, other drivers seem to be under the impression that Missouri roadways belong to motor vehicles alone, causing them to exhibit a hostile attitude and even antagonize riders by engaging in dangerous driving behaviors meant to frighten them.
Research has shown that having more riders on the road actually engenders more protected cycling conditions. Actually, the rate of fatal bicycle accidents is substantially lower in areas that have large volumes of bicycle riders. This is partially due to the resident’s heightened awareness of bicycle riders sharing the roadway.
Sadly, general intolerance and/or a total lack of regard for the legal rights of bicycle riders usually results in serious collisions between the two. The general unwillingness on the part of motor vehicle drivers to share Missouri’s roadways only serves to foster a more aggressive atmosphere and hazardous conditions for bike riders.
