Cole, MO (July 15, 2022) – Multiple people were injured as a result of a motor vehicle accident in the coal area. Just before 2:40 a.m., on July 14, the Missouri State Highway Patrol responded to the scene of a major bus crash that occurred on US Highway 54.
Reports provided by authorities show that 62-year-old Thomas Babbitt was driving a 2007 Prevost H3 Coach bus with multiple people on board. As he traveled down the eastbound side of US Highway 54, the driver fell asleep behind the wheel just 300 feet east of Farm view Road. As a result, the bus went off the left side of the roadway, traveled through the median, struck a ditch, and reentered the roadway. The bus then continued off the westbound side of the roadway, struck the house, crashed into a shed, and then broke through a fence before coming to rest in a field. The bus sustained significant damage and had to be towed from the scene.
Multiple people on board suffered injuries. Medical personnel provided care to four juvenile females, ages 15, 15, 16, and 16, and three juvenile males, two aged 15 and one aged 16, at the scene. One 15-year-old female, one 15-year-old male, and the 16-year-old male were both transported to St. Mary’s Hospital for further care. The remaining teens were transported to Capital Region Hospital.
Several adults were also injured in the accident. Medical personnel rendered aid to 18-year-old Isabela Dorge, 18-year-old Macie Goatz, 40-year-old Lindsay Wilson, 45-year-old Mandy McDonald, and 56-year-old Ronette Schulte.
Dorge and McDonald were both transported to Capital Region Hospital for care. The remaining adults were transported to St. Mary’s Hospital for further treatment.
The crash remains under investigation at this time.
Our thoughts are with Isabela Dorge, Macie Goatz, Ronette Schulte, Lindsay Wilson, and the teens who are injured in this accident. We hope for their full recovery.
