Joplin, MO (November 13, 2022) – A traffic accident took place in Newton County that left three people injured, according to local law enforcement. The crash was reported just before 3:30 p.m. on November 12.

According to reports provided by the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 2014 Chevrolet Camaro and a 2014 Honda CRV were both stopped at a red light on Missouri State Route 43 just one-quarter mile south of Joplin, Missouri. For reasons unknown, a 2008 Toyota Prius crashed into the rear of the Chevrolet. The impact of the crash caused the Chevrolet to strike the Honda.

40 people suffered injuries due to the crash. The victims were identified as 49-year-old Tonya Smith of Joplin, Missouri, 48-year-old Michelle Casey of Quapaw, Oklahoma, and 24-year-old Alexi Hailey of Joplin, Missouri. Smith and Haley were both transported to Freeman West Hospital in Joplin, Missouri, where they were treated for their injuries. Casey was transported to Mercy Hospital in Joplin, Missouri, for medical care.

The crash remains under investigation at this time.
