Fatal Pedestrian Accidents in Missouri

Doniphan, MO – Hank Stufflebeam Killed in Pedestrian Crash on US-160Pedestrian crashes in the United States took the lives of nearly 7500 people in 2021. Year after year, these crashes take the lives of thousands of innocent people. In many instances, pedestrian crashes are caused by drivers who engage in acts of negligence. Leading factors include:

  • Speeding: Speeding is one of the most common causes of pedestrian crashes in our state. When drivers exceed the posted speed limit or drive too fast for the conditions, they put themselves and others at risk.
  • Impaired Driving: Driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol is illegal and dangerous. Impaired drivers have slowed reaction times and impaired judgment, which can lead to serious accidents involving pedestrians.
  • Distracted Driving: Distracted driving is any activity that takes a driver’s attention away from the road. This can include things like talking on the phone, eating, or even changing the radio station. Distracted driving is becoming increasingly common with the dramatic increase in the use of cell phones and other devices. Unfortunately, drivers who are distracted are unlikely to see pedestrians in the area.
  • Fatigued Driving: Fatigued driving occurs when a driver is too tired to stay focused on the road. This can be caused by lack of sleep, working long hours, or taking medications that cause drowsiness. Fatigued driving can be just as dangerous as impaired driving and can have dangerous consequences for pedestrians.
