About the Devastating Joplin Tornado
On the afternoon of May 22, 2011, a tornado ripped through the heart of Joplin, Missouri, leaving the city of 50,000 in ruins. As of now, the death toll stands at 116 casualties with an estimated 400 injured. The tornado is the deadliest single tornado in the country since 1947 and the ninth-deadliest tornado on record. 25 to 30 percent of the city was damaged including one of the main hospitals, school buildings, stores, and restaurants. Entire neighborhoods were leveled with many others left without electricity.
The Foundation is a private foundation exempt from Federal Income Tax pursuant to §501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. All contributions to The Peterson Foundation, Inc. are fully tax deductible.
