Pfizer Settles Case With Nine Year Old Victim Of Dilantin ®

May 23, 2011

Recently, a case was settled with pharmaceutical manufacturer Pfizer Inc. on behalf of a family of a nine-year old girl who died as the result of the drug-induced disease, SJS that progressed to TEN, which caused all of her skin to slough off.

Dilantin® Lawsuit

The victim died less than a month after receiving the Pfizer-produced drugs Dilantin® and Flagyl.

Dilantin® is an anti-seizure drug and Flagyl is an anti-fungal. Shortly after the administration of the drugs, the patient developed a drug-induced condition known as TEN or toxic epidermal necrolysis.

It causes a severe rash and skin sloughing, often followed by infections, blindness or death. A study compiled by 15 burn centers in the U.S. revealed that more than 20% of TEN cases are believed to be caused by Dilantin® use, with deaths reported in approximately 1 of every 4 cases. Dilantin® is one of the most commonly prescribed anti-seizure drugs in the U.S.
