National Stop on Red Week Highlights Dangers of Running Red Lights

Categorized as Auto Accidents

According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, almost 8,000 people lost their lives between 2004 and 2013 as a result of someone who ran a red light. Although the majority of Americans consider running red lights to be dangerous, the problem continues to exist as drivers speed through red lights across the country.

In an effort to raise awareness of the dangers of running red lights, the National Coalition for Safer Roads has partnered with organizations throughout the country for National Stop on Red Week, currently being celebrated the week of August 2 through August 8.

Our Kansas City auto accident lawyers are prepared to defend your rights and help you get the compensation you deserve.

The awareness week equips motorists with tools and statistics to help drive home the fact that running red lights is extremely dangerous. The website even includes an interactive map that illustrates the states with the highest fatality rates as a result of red light running.

The statistics demonstrate just how dangerous running a red light really is:

  • One in three Americans know someone who was injured or killed in a crash caused by the running of a red light
  • More than 3.7 million drivers ran at least one red light in 2014
  • The most common time for red-light running to occur is in the afternoon and on Fridays
  • Running red lights is the leading cause of urban accidents, as reported by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety
  • Half of those killed by red-light runners are bicyclists, pedestrians and those in the vehicles hit by the runner

Running a red light is an easily avoidable problem to solve. If everyone would pay attention to the road and slow down and prepare for a red light, hundreds of lives could be saved every year.
