NHTSA Crackdown on Drunk Driving this Holiday Season
The national campaign Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over is underway, including an ad being shown before Star Wars: The Force Awakens, from Dec. 18 to Jan. 3. Sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the campaign urges Americans not to drink and drive and reminds people that law enforcement will be out in force protecting citizens from drunk drivers.
The movie ad features a young man and woman who realize they cannot trust themselves to make the right decision not to drive after drinking. The message is clear: if you are impaired, you are not in a position to decide whether you should get behind the wheel.
Statistics unveil lost lives due to impaired driving. While there was a 1.1 percent decline in drunk driving fatalities last year, 69 percent of the 9,967 collisions revealed a driver with a blood alcohol concentration of .15 or more – almost two times the set limit in each state. In December alone last year, there was a drunk driving fatality every 57 minutes.
This figure represents a need for people to make safe decisions during the holidays. The law enforcement crackdown continues with more than 10,000 police department and law enforcement agencies participating.
If you are heading out for a night of celebrating with family and friends, plan ahead. Designate a driver and plan a safe ride home. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has an app called SaferRide you can install before leaving for the evening. This app may be used to call for a ride if you need one and have been drinking.
While the holidays are a great time to join together with loved ones, it is imperative that safety is included. The law offices of Peterson & Associates wish you a happy and safe holiday.
