A Missouri couple died after a pickup landed on their SUV on Interstate 4, causing a crash that shut down the highway for hours in Volusia County.
The Florida Highway Patrol says the unusual accident involved a Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Timothy Engels, a 44-year-old man, from DeBary.
Authorities say Engels was traveling west on I-4 about 9:25 p.m. when Engels lost control of his vehicle, drove into the median, and hit the guardrail. Witnesses told authorities it appeared Engels, made an abrupt change shortly before losing control of his truck.
Engels’ vehicle went airborne and landed on top of the Rutkowskis’ SUV. Authorities say 66-year-old Phil Rutkowski died at the scene. Officials confirm his wife, 69-year-old Judith Rutkowski died a short time later at Halifax Medical Center.
Engels and his passenger were not wearing seatbelts and were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Officials say the cause of the accident remains under investigation.
