Is Vehicle Color Related to Accident Rates?
While it seems insignificant in the event of an accident, vehicles of certain colors are more likely to be involved in car accidents. Researchers have found certain vehicle colors are safer, while others pose a higher risk to drivers.
What color car is involved in the most accidents? Researchers in New Zealand have found that those who drive a brown vehicle have the highest risk of incurring serious crash-related injuries. Elevated accident risks are also associated with green and black vehicles.

Which Car Color is Safest?
White vehicles are approximately 10 percent less likely to be involved in daytime crashes compared to vehicles in low-visibility colors, including gray, black, blue, green, silver, and red. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Senior Vice President Russ Rader warns drivers not to count on vehicle color as a safety element. While a car’s color may affect auto accident risks, the risk reduction is likely minor.
White is also the most popular color for vehicles. White has been the most popular car color across North America since 2006, with the popularity rate increasing an additional six percent in 2013. Over the past few years, it has also become more popular throughout the rest of the world.
So why do drivers choose white? Jane Harrington, PPG Industries manager of color styling, theorizes that those who choose white vehicles are seeking an escape from the constant interactive world around them.
Drivers may also believe that vehicles which are lighter in color are more visible, speculating that this will improve their safety. Lighter vehicles require less maintenance than darker ones, which make scratches and imperfections more visible. Lighter colored cars can also take more neglect before wear and tear starts to show.
