A 17-month-old child of a newlywed couple was killed Saturday afternoon in a deadly accident in Overland Park. The three-vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of 175th Street and Pflumm Road. The toddler’s 20-year old mother and 8-year old adopted brother were also injured and are currently in critical care.

The child’s parents were married less than six months and are seeking help from their church. One of the drivers involved in the accident is being held pending charges. No further details have been released.

No one is prepared to lose a loved one in an auto-accident. The sense of tragedy is felt even greater when it happens to a child.

Car accident injuries are the leading cause of death among children in the U.S., according the Centers for Disease Control. They report that in 2013, 638 children were killed and more than 127,250 injured. Of those who died, 38 percent were neither wearing a safety belt nor in a safety car seat.

Car seats can reduce the risk of death by 71 percent for infants and 54 percent for toddlers. Different types of car seats are more effective for younger children. For example, children under two-years-old should be buckled into a rear-facing seat.

Even if you take all the precautions to keep your children safe, you cannot control the behavior of other drivers on the road. If your child is injured in a car accident, they might be facing expensive and painful medical procedures, long-term health consequences and a lifetime of disability. A head injury could permanently impair their basic motor skills, learning and social abilities. A child could suffer emotional trauma long after the accident.

Ideally, the at-fault driver’s insurance would cover the medical costs for an injury. However, with increasing medical costs, especially those involving long-term care, insurance companies are more frequently denying claims.

Don’t let an insurance company deny the compensation you are entitled to. If you or your child has been injured as a result of another driver’s negligence, contact the experienced Kansas City car accident lawyers at Peterson & Associates, P.C.™ We will work to get you justice.
