Labor Day DUI Crackdown

During the final weeks of summer, 10,000 + law agencies will be out and about. Drunk drivers will be targeted in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)’s “Driver Sober or Get Pulled Over” annual campaign.
Drunk drivers, who are caught by police with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .08 or more, will experience zero tolerance and be held accountable for their criminal actions.
Mark Rosekind, an NHTSA Administrator, states, “Targeted enforcement campaigns are an essential element in our strategy to save lives and reduce crashes.” However, “too many drivers continue to risk their lives and the lives of others by getting behind the wheel drunk.
U.S. Transportation Secretary, Anthony Foxx, reiterates Rosekind’s sentiments and says, “Drunk driving is deadly, it’s against the law, and despite years of progress, it’s still a problem. Basically, do not drink and drive. If you do, you will be stopped, arrested and prosecuted.
While the volume of drunk drivers on the road has been reduced, the public still is at risk for encountering a drunk driver any time of the day. Drunk driving is a serious threat and 31 percent of all motor vehicle traffic deaths are related to alcohol-impaired fatalities.
The best protection against a drunk driver is to wear your seatbelt, says the NHTSA. You can download the NHTSA’s free SafeRider app as well that will let you call a taxi or friend if you are too drunk to drive.
