How Do Self-Driving Cars Work?

Aug 19, 2020

Self-Driving Cars Defined

A self-driving car is often referred to as an autonomous vehicle. While self-driving cars rely on hardware and software without human input, autonomous cars have some level of control on their own.

Autonomous vehicle hardware collects data and the software compiles the data and processes it into learning algorithms and codes for an ultimate driving experience. While this may sound like something out of a sci-fi movie, this technology is used in cars today.

Read on to learn the ins and outs of self-driving, or autonomous, cars.

The Autonomous Driving Levels

The following are the levels and some examples of autonomous vehicles:

  • Level 0 - No automation with total human control. Example: Ford Model T.
  • Level 1 - The vehicle has single automated features such as speed monitoring and cruise control with driver assistance. Example: Lane assists, cruise control.
  • Level 2 - the vehicle has partial automation and can perform steering and acceleration with human control at any time. Example: Tesla Autopilot, Nissan ProPilot Assist.
  • Level 3 - the vehicle has conditional automation with environmental detection capabilities and can perform most driving tasks with human control at any time. Example: Uber self-driving car.
  • Level 4 - The vehicle has high automation and performs all driving tasks under certain conditions with human control at any time. Geofencing is needed. Example: Waymo’s autonomous vehicle.
  • Level 5 - the vehicle has full automation and performs all driving tasks under any circumstance without any human interaction. There are currently no fully automated vehicles available for consumers.
