Kansas City, MO (October 12, 2020) – Officers from the Independence Police Department reported that a 75-year-old man was killed on Monday, October 12th following a hit-and-run accident at the intersection of Sterling Avenue and U.S. 24. at about 7:30 a.m.

Officials stated that the accident took place when the driver of a 2013 Honda Odyssey, driving westbound along U.S. 24, ran a red light, colliding with a 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis.

Eyewitnesses told police that the driver of the Odyssey was traveling way over the legal speed limit moments before it struck the Mercury Grand Marquis.

Thomas Cooke, the driver of the Grand Marquis, was transported to a local hospital where he later passed away from his injuries. The lone passenger in Cooke’s car was also hospitalized with serious injuries.

Following the accident, police said the driver and three passengers from the Odyssey fled the scene. All four remain unidentified at this time.

This accident remains under investigation. A red light violation and high speeds are both believed to be major contributing factors in the collision.
